![]() Here it is another year.
A new year always offers a fresh start and new ideas. Classes start up again, new faces join our art scene. Some new projects to try out (or is that new addictions to take up!) Also plenty of new faces on the wildlife front, during the summer.
Lorraine O'Brien not only rescues and rehabilitates our native animals at her Wildlife Shelter on Hopkins Point Rd. She is also an artist who creates handcrafted original artworks and textiles in her studio overlooking the southern ocean at Logans Beach.
![]() This is the showcase for my creative activities. Here you will find textile art - weaving, felting, silk painting, textile sculpture, knitting, wearable art and handmade jewellery. You will also find visual art - painting, drawing, photography. Everything I create is individually hand crafted with love and attention to detail. I draw my inspiration from my location and lifestyle - the wonderful animals I am privileged to work with; the environment surrounding me - the glorious skies, sunsets and rainbows we see daily; the colours of the sea and the sand and the beauty of nature.
If you are the adventurous type you might wish to explore creativity for yourself. There are workshops available in most topics. You can book a workshop for yourself or with a friend or partner. Here you will be able to unwind and experience this glorious and inspirational location overlooking the ocean, whilst learning new skills and having lots of fun. Workshops are available on request and there is no minimum number required. You can learn how to create felt and felted garments, how to make mosaics, how to spin, how to knit and make yourself a pair of funky socks or beanie, how to weave and make a handwoven scarf in one weekend, how to create exquisite little figurines from wire and fabric, or how to enjoy your camera and take better photos. Wildlife
As I said this has been quite a busy summer on the wildlife front. Springtime saw the arrival of two baby koalas who had lost their mums and needed rearing. A young male - who earned the name Dribbles (not for his ball skills either), closely followed by a similar sized young female who gained the name Missy. They are both doing really well and might be ready for release mid year sometim
![]() The next exciting animal to arrive was a tiny microbat - a Gould's long-eared bat who must have fallen off his mother. Named Cliff by his rescuer - he weighed all of 3.5grams and had to be fed with the smallest syringe. Now he has grown and has been learning to fly and is almost ready for release. It has been a good fun learning curve.
![]() Next came Tess - a little 700 gram velvet (unfurred, but about to grow fur) swamp wallaby. She is so cute.
And a few weeks later her fur is already showing
And then along came Wenda, a just adult femal koala who was in a dreadful condition and had been attacked by a dog. Three times I thought we had reached the end, but she rallied and recovered remarkably and has just been released back to the wild. It's always wonderful to have a happy ending!
![]() Current Creativity
I have been having some fun playing with polymer clay and gemstones creating some new jewllery.
Here are some examples:
![]() And I finished one of my best paintings ever (in my current opinion!) It was a commission for a friend and I am very pleased with it
